Understanding IP Addresses: IPv4, IPv6, VPNs, and What Sites Can See
Learn what your public IP address reveals, why IPv4 and IPv6 can appear differently, and how to verify whether a VPN or proxy changed what websites see.
Your IP address is the return address websites use to send data back to your device. It can reveal your approximate region, internet provider, hosting network, or VPN exit network, but it normally does not reveal your exact street address. IPv4 addresses are the familiar four-part numbers such as 203.0.113.10. IPv6 addresses are longer and were created because the internet outgrew the IPv4 address space. Many connections now use both. Depending on your network, a website may see IPv4, IPv6, or a proxy/CDN-provided forwarding header.
What to test
Load the IP check page on your normal connection and note the IP, country, city, and provider. Then enable your VPN, proxy, mobile hotspot, or corporate network and reload the page. A successful privacy change should usually show a different public IP and provider. If only your browser language or time zone changes, your network identity may not have changed.
VPN and proxy caveats
A VPN replaces the public network address visible to websites with the VPN exit address. It does not automatically change your browser fingerprint, cookies, logged-in accounts, or time zone. A proxy may affect only one app or browser. Corporate gateways and carrier-grade NAT can make many users share one public IP, which is normal and not a security problem by itself.
Accuracy limits
IP geolocation databases are approximate. They often show the ISP's registered location, a nearby exchange, or a VPN data center rather than your physical location. If the city looks wrong, the site is usually not broken; the database is simply estimating from network ownership data.

Use IP results as a network visibility check. For stronger privacy, combine network protection with browser privacy settings, careful account separation, and permission hygiene.
